The Essence of Liberty: Volume I: Liberty and History: The Rise and Fall of the Noble Experiment with Constitutionally Limited Government (Liberty and ... Limited Government) (Volume 1)Chapter 19: Contra the Lincoln Cult

The Lincoln cult is composed primarily of academics that have their professional reputations wrapped up in publications that deify Lincoln as a Jesus or Moses-like figure. These cultists are more cover-up artists, court historians, gatekeepers, and propagandists than they are genuine scholars.

However, in recent years there has been number of publications by “outsiders.” These are authors who are not card-carrying members of the Lincoln cult and therefore are not burdened by the choice of either having to toe the party line or sacrifice their careers.

Here are a few examples for those who might wish to pursue the topic further.

One is The Great Tax Wars: Lincoln to Wilson –The Fierce Battles Over Money and Power That Transformed the Nation, by Steven R. Weisman.

Another “outsider” with exceptional historical clarity and a hunger for the truth is James Webb, author of the book Born Fighting, A History of the Scots-Irish in America.

In addition, professor Michael F. Holt challenged the cult wisdom in his book, The Fate of Their Country. Unlike Weisman and Webb, Holt is an academic. But he is not a Lincoln cultist. He is the history profession’s top expert on the antebellum era, having authored the monumental book The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party, and The Political Crisis of the 1850’s. He is also the co-author of The Civil War and Reconstruction.

The business historian, John Steele Gordon spoke his mind without fear in Hamilton’s Blessing.

Michael Lind’s What Lincoln Believed dismisses the absurd notion that Lincoln was philosophically a Jeffersonian. Lind quotes Lincoln’s longtime law partner, William Herndon, as saying “Mr. Lincoln hates Thomas Jefferson as a man and as a politician.”

Yet another example of a book by outsiders who have challenged the Lincoln cult is Lincoln’s Wrath: Fierce Mobs, Brilliant Scoundrels and President’s Mission to Destroy the Press, by journalist Jeffery Manber and historian Neil Dahlstrom.

The book’s appendix contains many more for those who have had their interest whetted.

About Land & Livestock Interntional, Inc.

Land and Livestock International, Inc. is a leading agribusiness management firm providing a complete line of services to the range livestock industry. We believe that private property is the foundation of America. Private property and free markets go hand in hand—without property there is no freedom. We also believe that free markets, not government intervention, hold the key to natural resource conservation and environmental preservation. No government bureaucrat can (or will) understand and treat the land with as much respect as its owner. The bureaucrat simply does not have the same motives as does the owner of a capital interest in the property. Our specialty is the working livestock ranch simply because there are so many very good reasons for owning such a property. We provide educational, management and consulting services with a focus on ecologically and financially sustainable land management that will enhance natural processes (water and mineral cycles, energy flow and community dynamics) while enhancing profits and steadily building wealth.
